Bananas are some of the most consumed fruit today and are considered to be “healthy food”. They are often included by nutrition doctor in heart-healthy diets. Some scientists suggest that bananas could be the first fruit that appeared on Earth. Bananas are grown in more than 100 countries around the world and their consumption has many benefits on our bodies.
Bananas should be part of every balanced diet, as a banana of average size contains lots of vitamins and minerals:
- Vitamin B6 – 0.5 mg
- Vitamin C – 9 mg
- Potassium – 450 mg (almost 10% of the daily recommended intake – 4700 mg)
- Fibers – 3 g
- Iron – 0.3 g
Asthma: according to a study performed by the Imperial College in London showed that children who eat at least a banana per day have a 34% smaller risk of developing asthma
Heart: fibers, Potassium, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C are extremely beneficial for the human heart. Decreasing the daily Sodium intake and eating more Potassium-rich foods leads to a better functioning of the heart. Also, it reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, according to Dr. Mark Houston of the Vanderbilt Medical School. Considerably higher doses of Potassium consumed (approximately 4 grams daily) are associated to an up to 49% decrease of the risk of developing an ischemic heart disease
Type 1 diabetes: some studies have shown that patients who suffer from type 1 diabetes and consume high-fiber foods have lower blood sugar. Bananas are recommended in a regular diabetic diet, because one banana contains approximately 3 grams of fiber. On average, women need 21 to 25 grams of fiber per day, while the daily fiber intake for men is up to 30-38 grams.
Diarrhea: bananas are extremely useful in case of diarrhea. Large quantities of electrolytes, such as Potassium, are lost after episodes of loose motions, which leads to a quick degradation of the person’s condition. By consuming Potassium rich foods, such as a banana, many of the fiber reserves are restored
Cancer: feeding bananas, oranges and orange juice to children in their first two years of life can reduce the risk of developing leukemia. The free radicals found in our bodies are annihilated by the vitamin C found in bananas and oranges. Furthermore, the fiber in bananas can considerably reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
